Heavy & Oversized Cargo Permits in Saudi Arabia: What You Need

Equipment, transformers and project cargo that exceed standard dimensions need permits and planning before they move. Here is what is involved.

What counts as an oversized load

Any load exceeding standard dimension or axle-weight limits — typically wide, tall or long machinery, transformers, tanks and structural steel — is classed as abnormal and needs an oversize permit before it can move on public roads, regardless of the trailer used to carry it.

Permits and route approval

Permits are issued per move and tied to a specific route, so the authority reviews bridge clearances, low cables, roundabouts and tight turns along the way before approving it. Complex or very large loads may need a route survey in advance — leave lead time, since this is not a same-day approval.

Escorts and timing

Depending on the load size, escort vehicles front and rear are required to manage traffic and mark the load, and some moves are restricted to night hours or specific time windows to reduce road impact. Signage and lighting on the load itself are mandatory.

Planning an oversized move

Book well ahead of the required delivery date, share exact dimensions and weight early, and use a carrier that runs its own lowbed and step-deck fleet and handles the permit and escort arrangements directly. NAQL plans and executes oversized moves end to end, from permit application to delivery.
